Faith in Action is an interfaith volunteer caregiving initiative of the The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, bring together volunteers from many faiths to work together to care for their neighbors who have long-term health needs.

Faith in Action volunteers come from churches, synagogues, mosques and other houses of worship, as well as the community at large. Volulnteers help those in need by providing non-medical assistance with tasks such as:

  • picking up a few groceries or running errands
  • providing a ride to the doctor
  • friendly visiting (talking & listening)
  • reading or helping to pay bills

“Most people want to help …most people want to do good… they just don’t know how. Faith in Action gives them a chance to do simple things that make a big difference.”

–Della Reese. Entertainment legend. Faith in Action believer.

With this volunteer assistance, members of the community who have long-term health needs can maintain their independence for as long as possible. Although, each Faith in Action program is unique in the services provided and care receives being served, there are five basic characteristics :

  • Interfaith - Building partnerships with congregations, social services, health and civic organizations
  • Volunteer - Volunteers from community and faith congregations offer services to people in community with long term health needs.
  • Caregiving - Focus on informal care and help with everyday activities (i.e. transportation, shopping and other errands, friendly visits, respite for caregiver, etc.)
  • Long-term Illness - Serves people with long-term illness such as Alzheimer's, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, HIV, frail/elderly, etc.
  • Home Based - Provides care where people reside.
